I was in Duluth on my way home from birding the North Shore when I got notice that Jeff Grotte found a Snowy Owl north of Grove City. I plead the fifth on how long it took me to get to Grove City, but I beat dusk and the coming snow and was able to see the owl. When I saw it, it was on top of a large, metal support structure for the transmission line that runs northwest/southeast just to the northwest of the intersection of MN Hwy 4 and 355th St. This structure was west of MN Hwy 4 in the middle of a field, so my views were distant. Jeff and others were able to view it much closer on the power poles along MN 4.
The owl showed fairly heavy barring which would make it different from the all-white owl my friend Mike had seen from a distance of 10 yards. Jeff Grotte actually talked to Mike and showed him the pictures of today's owl, and Mike said it was a different bird. Great find Jeff! Maybe this is the tip of a Snowy Owl spear? Please keep me in the loop if you find these owls in the Meeker/Kandiyohi area.
