The bird is a male Green Woodpecker and the mammal is the same as the NAmerican least weasel. BBC TV News covered this story tonight (PBS). They talked to the photographer and also a naturalist who spoke about the weasel. My guide to birds of Europe says the woodpecker is 12 1/2 inches long. They eat a lot of ants. It seems that the weasel attacked the bird on the ground and hung on when the bird took off. Weasels are ferocious.
