Hi all, Friday and Saturday will be the last days the Sax-Zim Welcome Center will be open for the winter. Thanks to all of you who visited us this winter! Highlights were 100s of redpolls and siskins (including at least 3 Hoaries), Ermine at the far rib cage, Shrike, Ruffed Grouse in birches by parking lot.
Many of the winter birds have already headed north....redpolls, Pine Grosbeaks, etc. And the first Black Bear was sighted yesterday so time to pack up the feeders! BUT many birds remain: Sharp-tailed Grouse: Dancing on leks at CR29 and also on the ARkola/CR52 lek at intersection with Poplar Rd (SW near outhouse like building) BUT you need to be out and about early Gray Jays and Boreal Chickadees linger at Admiral Road feeders but will be gone soon Great Gray Owl was last seen about a week ago on Nichols Lake Road a couple miles east of CR7 FRIENDS OF SAX-ZIM BOG SPRING FIELD TRIPS Friday May 1st—Things that Go Buzz, Croak, Hoot and Bump in the Night (Late afternoon until after dark) Early migrants, Frog songs, Woodcock & Snipe Aerial Displays, Owls? (Last year we had killer looks at Bittern and Great Gray Owl) WARBLER WEDNESDAYS—MAY 13, 20, 27 (dawn-noon) We’ll be birding in a car caravan looking for warblers and other spring migrants. BOG BIOBLITZ III—Saturday JUNE 27th Go in the field with experts in many areas (birds, spiders, dragonflies, butterflies, wildflowers, and more!) Then return to the Welcome Center to share your findings and see what the other groups found. ST.
