I am forwarding this invitation from Audubon MN. Artificial night light has negative effects on birds, especially during migration. As part of the national Lights Out program, Audubon MN has been working to turn out the lights at night in downtown bldgs in spring and fall for many years. Contact info below.
--------------------------- What: Afternoon with Audubon When: Saturday, April 18th, 2015 1-3pm Where: MN Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center 3815 American Blvd E Bloomington, MN 55425 Event Info: You are invited to join Audubon Minnesota for an afternoon focused on the impacts that humans can have on birds and the environment we share with them. Audubon is pleased to announce that our guest speaker for this Afternoon with Audubon MN is Paul Bogard, author of "The End of Night". A starry night is one of nature's most magical wonders. Yet in our artificially lit world, most of us no longer experience true darkness. In this talk based on his book THE END OF NIGHT, Paul Bogard seeks to restore our awareness of the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky and how it has influenced the human experience across everything from science to art. Using a blend of personal narrative, natural history, science, and astronomy, Bogard shares the importance of darkness--what we've lost, what we still have, and what we might regain--and the simple ways we can reduce the brightness of our nights tonight. Audubon Minnesota's Bird-Friendly Communities Manager, Joanna Eckles, will also be speaking about ways we impact birds locally and what we can do to help protect birds in our own backyards. Light refreshments will be served and if the weather is permitting there will be opportunities for birding on the lovely refuge grounds after the presentations. Author, Paul Bogard, will also have his book available for purchase and signing after the event! If weather is permitting we may do a little birding hike on the refuge afterwards!
