Yesterday Debbie and I birded the western portion of Lac Qui Parle and Big Stone counties. We had 21 species of waterfowl despite missing Western and Eared Grebe. The highlight of the day was seeing as many as 6000-7000 Greater White-fronted Geese fly over all day long. We also had a couple of flocks of Snow Geese. Salt Lake was full of waterfowl and the windy conditions made scoping the lake a challenge. Shorebirds were few and far between despite the mudflats that were exposed at almost all the places we visited. We had a small flock of Tree Sparrows and a probable group of Lapland Longspurs (they flew over the car and away they went in the wind). Not bad for a couple of Floridians on spring break.
