When I closely examined some Redpoll photos that I took this spring, I found some with orange or yellow feathers on the top of the head. I don't remember seeing this before. I did some internet searching and found some photos and references to orange feathers but no explanation for it. Does anyone know what causes this? Here's a link to some photos.
