At 5:45 this morning my dad and I arrived at the site to find the nest...empty! The letdown didn't last long as we eventually heard and tracked down the recently fledged bird. In our two hours of observation we saw one of the adults occasionally come to the young bird and give it food. The fledgling called continually but often remained still in one spot. A few times it flew from tree to tree and climbed the trunks with mom. The two birds were inside the loop formed by the boardwalk which is not that big of a loop. By the time we left they were right by the boardwalk on the left path.
This was a great lifer to get in my old hometown and a nice excuse to go to my Dad's on Father's Day. One thing I'd like to add to the previous postings is that this is the Mickey Elverum Bog Walk, named after my late 7th grade science teacher and father of a classmate. These nesting Woodpeckers are a great tribute to a highly regarded teacher and dad. Thanks to Julie Grahn for the find and to Sparky Stensaas and Dee Kuder for the updates.
