On Wednesday, July 15, I observed 70 species in Washington County (Pine Bend
Bluffs Scientific and Natural Area [SNA]: east side of Highway 95 < 1 mile
south of the Chisago County line, and Wm. O'Brien State Park) and Anoka County
(Boot Lake Scientific and Natural Area and nearby sections of Carlos Avery
Wildlife Management Area [WMA]). Noteworthy sightings at Pine Bend Bluffs SNA
included 6 singing Acadian Flycatchers, 3 Red-breasted Nuthatches, 1 Louisiana
Waterthrush (not singing), and 1 singing Pine Warbler. Noteworthy sightings at
Wm. O' Brien State Park, all of them near the Group Campground parking lot
about 200 feet west of the St. Croix River, included 1 male Prothonotary
Warbler feeding a fledgling in the same vicinity as 1 adult Pine Warbler. There
are very few places in Minnesota where these two species occur together in
July. In the adjacent woods were 2 adult Ovenbirds (one singing) with
fledglings nearby. A male Black-and-White-Warbler was singing in full view in
the tamarack bog at Boot Lake SNA, and 10+ Black Terns were present at several
different locations at Carlos Avery WMA. If you go to Pine Bend Bluffs SNA, be
prepared for deer ticks, and be prepared for a lot of mosquitos and deer flies
at Boot Lake SNA.
