On Friday evening, July 24, Gary Johnson and I were unsuccessful at finding the Tropical Kingbird at Murphy-Hanrehan State Park, but we did see and hear two Grasshopper Sparrows singing near a small wetland located on the south side of the trail several hundred yards from the picnic table in the vicinity of where the kingbird had been seen previously (trail marker 36). The small wetland is WSW about half way from trail marker 36 to trail marker 30. We also saw and heard two Henslow's Sparrows singing in separate locations, one of which can be easily accessed from the horse trail/pet trail parking lot at the park, in the opposite direction from the trail to the location where the kingbird had been seen. This location is on the west side of the trail about one-third of the way from the horse trail parking lot NNW to trail marker 25.
On Saturday, July 25, Gary Johnson and I observed 80 species of birds, mostly in Washington and Anoka counties. Especially noteworthy observations included: 5 Lark Sparrows, including 2 adults and 1 fledgling, all in the northwest corner of Bunker Hills Regional Park, Anoka County. 7 Acadian Flycatchers, 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch, 4 singing Wood Thrushes, 3 Blue-winged Warblers at once, and 2 singing Pine Warblers in or near Falls Creek Scientific and Natural Area in extreme northeastern Washington County. We also heard a waterthrush chipping along Falls Creek that we suspected was a Louisiana Waterthrush, but we were unable to locate the bird.
