After an outstanding August in Carver County, September did not disappoint.
The outstanding warbler numbers and variety from August continued until
September 12. From September 13 through September 22 warbler variety and
numbers were average for the time of year with a couple of relatively poor days
mixed in. From September 23 through September 30 warbler numbers were once
again good for the dates. The vast majority of warbler seen during the month
were the four species one would expect: Yellow-rumped, Nashville, Tennessee,
and Common Yellowthroat. After poor seasons for Yellow-rumped Warbler this
last spring and fall, it was nice to see Yellow-rumped Warbler so numerous
again. For the month I saw 140 species with 16 trips to Rapids Lake MVNWR, 6
to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and 5 to Carver Park Reserve. I saw 134
species at Rapids Lake, 71 at the arboretum, and 88 at Carver Park.
Flycatcher numbers were relatively typical for the month. Vireo numbers were
slightly below average, and sparrow numbers were good. Bird of the month was
a tie between the Connecticut Warbler at Rapids Lake and the Le Conte's Sparrow
at the arboretum.
