As the manager for Salt Lake WMA in Lac qui Parle County, I'm assessing the
need and feasibility for water level management on this lake. As you may know,
wetlands and shallow lakes require dry periods to maintain their biological
vigor. I believe Salt Lake has been in a high water state too long (due to a
natural wet cycle and upstream tile drainage). Unfortunately, the habitat
quality and subsequent shorebird use have diminished. I'm looking for any
historical records folks might have on bird numbers and/or water levels. I'm
particularly interested in seeing what bird use (waterfowl, shorebirds, water
birds, etc.) was like during drought periods vs. wet periods, and exactly when
those droughts occurred. If you have any data or general information that
could help, I'd love to hear from you. Email or call. Thanks!
