Hello all,

I saw an interesting post on the ebird facebook page today and it got me
thinking about rarities in the three states that I cover as a hotspot
reviewer.

I often see new hotspots related to the sighting being created when a
rarity shows up, but there are also many people who just pick the closest
hotspot. even if it is not really appropriate.

Therefore, I'm going to try and make sure that I quickly log on to eBird
and make a hotspot for the rare sighting.

This hotspot will be named something like:

   - stakeout Ivory Gull, Duluth, Canal Park (2016)

This accomplishes two things:

1) It helps to make more people select the correct location for the
sighting instead of just picking a nearby hotspot (although in the case of
the Ivory Gull. the closest hotspot would've been Canal Park, but that is
just an example)

2) It helps to alert people who use eBird to the rarity and the actual
location it is being seen, so they can find it.

Shortly after a rare sighing, I will try and remember to post to each of
these three listservs to help alert people to change their sighting to this
hotspot if they might have posted their sighting to a different hotspot.

Thanks,

Derek Bakken
eBird Hotspot Reviewer for MN, IA, and ND
