As the amount of ice continues to dwindle, the gull numbers remain impressive
in the Lake City area. Several of us worked up and downriver on the MN side of
the Mississippi River today, but there were huge numbers on the WI side as
well. The best loafing areas seem to be the pier just east of the marina in
town, and near the DNR office and Sportsman's Club which are both on Oak St.
east of Hwy 61. None of these birds were around all day, so patience was
needed.
Glaucous Gull - 1st cycle - seen in the morning out from DNR officeThayer's or
Iceland Gull - adult type - very distant looks from DNR office late
afternoonLesser Black-backed Gull - 2nd cycle - seen from pier and Marina -
middayishGreat Black-backed Gull - 3rd cycle - seen from pier and marina - Only
1 bird today, and it showed up very late (6PM?), but afforded nice looks
There was also a Beaver hanging out near the pier.
Other interesting birds from Lake City:
Several large flocks of Tundra Swans totalling several hundred birdsCommon Loon
- seen and heard from "the point" just west of the MarinaRed-breasted
MerganserGreater White-fronted Goose American White PelicanCommon Redpoll
