THINGS THAT GO BUZZ, CROAK, HOOT & BUMP IN THE NIGHT Friday, May 6th 5:30-10pm or so Leader: Sparky Stensaas & Clinton Nienhaus FREE for those who have donated at least $20 to FOSZB in last 12 months $20 for those who have not. This will be your annual membership and all other field trips will be free. MEET AT WELCOME CENTER AT 5:30pm 6-8pm Dusk birding for early migrants and we'll also look for Great Grays and other owls. 8-9pm Watch and listen for displaying American Woodcock and Snipe, and calling frogs. 9-10pm or so. We'll make several stops to listen for owls. Saw-whets are most likely. We will car pool. Bring radios if you have them. **NOTE ROAD CLOSURE...CR52/Arkola is closed from Cotton on US53 west to CR7. The Sax-Zim Bog is a diverse set of habitats with a flowering plant list over 200 species! Bog orchids, carnivorous plants, and boreal forest specialties can all be found in the expanses of the bog. Be prepared for a leisurely hike, perhaps venturing in to the bog at times! Leader: Clinton Nienhaus Friday, May 13 Phenology Series 3: Boreal Forest Hubbub 8:00-10:00 am Meeting at Warren Nelson Bog off on Blue Spruce Road [Go west on CR133 from US53 towards Meadowlands. Turn right (north) on Blue Spruce Road. Warren Nelson Bog is about a 1/2 mile north on left (west) side.] May is a prime time to be in the Bog. Birds are signing, insects are buzzing, plants are flowering, and life is moving forward. We will spend time this week in listening and learning bird calls, observing insects, and looking for new life in the bog. Leader: Clinton Nienhaus Friday, May 13 Dragonflies & Damselflies 11:00 am- 12:30pm Meeting at the Welcome Center Dragonflies and damselflies are a recognizable group of insects that can often be seen around ponds and lakes. Recently, dragonflies and damselflies have become of recreational interest to naturalists and the general public alike. Come out to learn the differences and similarities in dragonflies and damselflies and maybe try your hand at catching a few for closer investigation. Leader: Clinton Nienhaus Friday, May 13 Marvelous Mustelids 1:00- 2:00pm Meeting at the Welcome Center Mustelids are a group of long-bodied, short-legged, energetic, and smelly mammals! Weasels, otters, mink, and badgers make up Minnesota’s representative species in this charismatic family. Come out to learn a little more about these not often seen critters. Leader: Clinton Nienhaus Friday, May 20 Frogs and Toads of Minnesota 4:00- 6:00pm Meeting at the Welcome Center Frogs and toads calling are signs of spring and often continue long into the summer months. The neat thing about these amphibians is that they can be identified by call, much like birds. Come out for an early evening amphibian expedition, listening and looking for the many species of frog and toad in northern Minnesota. Leader: Clinton Nienhaus **Please RSVP to natural...@saxzim.org Friday, May 27 Beautiful Butterflies and Mysterious Moths 9:00 am- 10:30 am Meeting at the Welcome Center Butterflies and moths are very different, but very beautiful! Butterflies are dayflying and are readily seen in yards and parks across Minnesota. Moths, on the other hand, are much harder to find during the day! Where do they go during the day? During this program, we will discuss the differences and similarities between butterflies and moths. Following the program feel free to join on a short butterfly walk! In one day, you could find true bog specialties, prairie plants, and boreal forest staples, all within a few miles of one another. Come out for a leisurely hike, looking for these plants and learn a little about bog ecosystems and why the plant communities are so unique!
