Wildflower Wednesday
1:00- 3:00pm Meeting at the Welcome Center

If you don’t want to join the early birds for Warbler Wednesdays, come out
after lunch to see some iconic bog wildflowers! The Sax-Zim Bog is a diverse
set of habitats with a flowering plant list over 200 species! Bog orchids,
carnivorous plants, and boreal forest specialties can all be found in the
expanses of the bog. Be prepared for a leisurely hike, perhaps venturing in to
the bog at times!
Leader: Clinton Nienhaus

Friday, May 13
Phenology Series 3: Boreal Forest Hubbub
8:00-10:00 am Meeting at Warren Nelson Bog off on Blue Spruce Road [Go west on
CR133 from US53 towards Meadowlands. Turn right (north) on Blue Spruce Road.
Warren Nelson Bog is about a 1/2 mile north on left (west) side.]

May is a prime time to be in the Bog. Birds are signing, insects are buzzing,
plants are flowering, and life is moving forward. We will spend time this week
in listening and learning bird calls, observing insects, and looking for new
life in the bog.
Leader: Clinton Nienhaus

Friday, May 13
Dragonflies & Damselflies
11:00 am- 12:30pm Meeting at the Welcome Center

Dragonflies and damselflies are a recognizable group of insects that can often
be seen around ponds and lakes. Recently, dragonflies and damselflies have
become of recreational interest to naturalists and the general public alike.
Come out to learn the differences and similarities in dragonflies and
damselflies and maybe try your hand at catching a few for closer investigation.
Leader: Clinton Nienhaus

Friday, May 13
Marvelous Mustelids
1:00- 2:00pm Meeting at the Welcome Center

Mustelids are a group of long-bodied, short-legged, energetic, and smelly
mammals! Weasels, otters, mink, and badgers make up Minnesota’s representative
species in this charismatic family. Come out to learn a little more about these
not often seen critters.
Leader: Clinton Nienhaus

Friday, May 20
Frogs and Toads of Minnesota
4:00- 6:00pm Meeting at the Welcome Center

Frogs and toads calling are signs of spring and often continue long into the
summer months. The neat thing about these amphibians is that they can be
identified by call, much like birds. Come out for an early evening amphibian
expedition, listening and looking for the many species of frog and toad in
northern Minnesota.

Friday, May 27
Beautiful Butterflies and Mysterious Moths
9:00 am- 10:30 am Meeting at the Welcome Center

Butterflies and moths are very different, but very beautiful! Butterflies are
dayflying and are readily seen in yards and parks across Minnesota. Moths, on
the other hand, are much harder to find during the day! Where do they go during
the day? During this program, we will discuss the differences and similarities
between butterflies and moths. Following the program feel free to join on a
short butterfly walk!

Bog Wildflower Hike
11:00 am- 1:00 pm Meeting at the Welcome Center

The Sax-Zim Bog is a network of habitats, which, in turn, allow for a large
diversity of flowering plants! In one day, you could find true bog specialties,
prairie plants, and boreal forest staples, all within a few miles of one
another. Come out for a leisurely hike, looking for these plants and learn a
little about bog ecosystems and why the plant communities are so unique!
