In the spring 2016 issue of the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, Carrol
Henderson wrote about the resurgence of the sandhill crane in Minnesota.

He described observing large numbers of cranes at Carlos Avery WMA in Anoka
County. The cranes in the article were relating to an area that had been
managed by a prescribed fire in 2015.

Pool 9 in the central part of Carlos Avery was managed with prescribed fire on
April 20, 2016. Since the day after the burn, dozens to 70 cranes have been
feeding and loafing in the burned sedge areas of Pool 9. Some cranes are
generally present all day, but they seem more abundant and easier to see early
in the morning. The cranes using Pool 9 are apparently non-breeders.

In other areas of the WMA, pairs of cranes with single and twin colts have been
seen the last two days. Careful observation of crane pairs may reveal a colt.
The WMA roads are in good condition.
