We are watching a white-crowned sparrow near Cascade Park on the shore of Lake
Superior. The head, neck and back look normal, but the usually clean gray
breast and flanks have long, scruffy black feathers that hang down (more on one
side than the other). It is very skittish and frequently flies into nearby
shrubbery and picks and preens at them. Any thoughts on what may have caused
this?
