A pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers appears to be building a nest next to my
driveway. I'd love people to have a chance to see them, but there are a few
problems with visitors right now: I'm going to be gone for the next 3
weeks; my 97-year-old mother-in-law, who lives with us and has dementia, is
easily confused by strangers calling or coming to the door; there's a
dangerous drop-off from the front yard to the driveway; and my little dog
will be anxious with me gone—we're afraid of the possibility of her running
out of the yard.

If you would like to come, please email me at least the day before because
I'll have limited access and even more limited free time while I'm teaching
on Hog Island in Maine.

Cardinals are also courting here, so my yard is starting to have the feel
of central rather than northern Minnesota, but I did hear four Evening
Grosbeaks a few doors down for a short time last week.

For the love, understanding, and protection of birds

There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds.
There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of
nature--the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the
winter.
