Skip this if you are not using the smartphone interface to enter bird sightings into the MOU system.

The smartphone interface to enter bird sightings has changed recently. The browser Chrome has decided, "for security reasons", that a javascript interface to the GPS on your smartphone should be disabled unless you are using https:

This makes no sense to me, since the application that is being used on the smartphone (http://moumn.org/n/) does not make any internet connection at all after it is loaded into the smartphone.

To get around this problem there are several possible solutions
1. https: access to moumn.org has been added (https://moumn.org). If you connect with Chrome through the SSL interface, reading of the GPS is possible and the app will keep track of your location and automatically set your county. If you use this solution, you need to go back to the smartphone page and request a "Load Records". The SSL connection and non-SSL connection are two different databases in the Chrome browser. In plain words click on https://moumn.org and then click on

        Reporting Birds -> Smartphone Reporting

then click on "Load Records". Then click on the link above https://moumn.org/n/

2. change browsers. Firefox and Opera browsers have been tested and they work with and without SSL. There are some developer's notes that indicate that Firefox is talking about making the same change that Chrome made. No additional information about Opera is available, except that it works.

iPhone and iPad may have stopped working also. There is an error message produced that is displayed at the very bottom of the species list that shows latitude and longitude. The Chrome browser now displays the message

    Only secure origins are allowed (see: https://goo.gl/Y0ZkNV).

If you have any additional information about this new "feature", please let me know.

Thanks.
