South Heron Lake -Jackson Co.

Final tally includes 9(!) SURF, 3 BLACK, and 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS amongst a
whopping 21 species of waterfowl. I also had all 3 Merganser species, which
seems pretty early to me. 3 Western Grebes in total. Large influx of Common
Loons (40+) and several hundred Lapland Longspurs.

A scope is absolutely required for viewing as everything was very distant. Very
few of my phone scoped photos came out to anything fruitful. Again, viewing was
from Stern/Kalash Point just west of Sandy Point Co. Park. Take the single lane
north and stop at the snag where the road turns east. I stood in the bed of my
truck to get the best vantage possible for scoping the north end of the lake
here. Patience is key!

Also be advised that this area has had active duck hunters present.

To: <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>

I haven't even made it past my first scoping vantage, overlooking the north end
of South Heron Lake in Jackson Co., and I have 1 White-winged Scoter, 2 Black
Scoters, and a whopping 6 Surf Scoters at present. Western Grebe from yesterday
also continuing.

Will report back.
