On December 9, Dennis Donath recorded that the age of the Chickadee he was
handling will be 9 years old after Jan 1, 2017. The bird was first captured and
banded at Carpenter Nature Center on 11/07/09. That is old for a chickadee,
very few exceed 5 years in age. For those doing the math in human figuring, it
is not that old, the banding laboratory lists the birds hatching year as year
one and after each New Years Day it is a year older. That chickadee entered our
traps or flew into a mist net numerous times over the years. I wonder if it
learned that if it walked into a Potter’s trap and hopped on the treadle it
could sit and eat sun flower seeds till someone came and extracted it.
