I birded Lake Calhoun with Fred Smith from 2-3 p.m.
Surprisingly, most of the lake was open, as yesterday afternoon
it was 2/3 frozen with skim ice. Birds present: Canada goose
(maybe 200), 4 cackling geese (had to be more), mallards,
wigeon (1), canvasback (1), black scoter (1), common golden
eye (many), common merganser (many more), hooded
merganser (lots), American coot. Few gulls, but this was
before their normal roosting time. Lake Harriet had very few
birds on it.
