Here are some of the species observed on the Minnesota Birding Weekend to St. 
Louis and Lake counties and a few birds observed prior to the trip.


St. Louis County - 1/14

American Black Duck - Canal Park

Long-tailed Duck - Canal Park

Ruffed Grouse - Observed in a number of locations in the Sax Zim bog.

Sharp-tailed Grouse - 7 were observed at the Lek along East side of CR 229, 
North of Racek Road.

Mourning Dove - Observed in a Conifer across the street from Mary Lou's house 
in the Sax Zim bog.

Ring-billed Gull - 1 observed at Canal Park

Herring Gull - 4 observed at Canal Park.

Great Gray Owl - Two were observed along Lake Nichols Road.

Northern Shrike - 4 were observed in different locations in the Sax Zim bog.

Purple Finch

White-winged Crossbill - A small flock was observed along CR 52(Arkola Road), 
1/4 mile East of CR 203(Owl Avenue).

Lake County 1/13 & 15

Red-breasted Merganser - Agate Bay, Two Harbors

Spruce Grouse - Tomahawk Road, about 1.5 miles from MN 1.  Observed at 12:30 
pm, feeding at the top of a Red Pine tree.

Black-backed Woodpecker

1/13 - Tomahawk Road, about 1.5 miles from MN 1.

1/15 - CR 2, 3.1 miles South of the Sand River, or 7.7 miles South of MN 1.

1/15 - MN 1, . 7 miles East of the Tomahawk Road.

Northern Shrike

Gray Jay

Boreal Chickadee - Near the Greenwood Lake public boat access.

American Robin

Bohemian Waxwing - A single bird was observed across the street from the 
Holiday Gas station on the East end of Two Harbors.

House Finch

Purple Finch

White-winged Crossbill

Common Redpoll

Pine Siskin


St. Louis County - 1/15

Golden-crowned Sparrow - Was observed at the usual location at 7:20 am and flew 
off at 7:30 am.


Our group missed, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow and a few of the other recently 
reported species from the area.
