Yesterday evening at about 5:00 PM while driving around Mound Spring SNA (along
the SD
border, off CR 15) in Yellow Medicine County there was a big flock of Lapland
Longspurs
foraging for grit on the roadside, then moving over the moraines of the SNA. "A
few thousand"
would be my best guess as to the numbers.

Also found 3 Short-Eared Owls at the same site as the sun was going down.

Snow Buntings are still plentiful in the area, as are Horned Larks with flocks
averaging 12-20
jumping up from the roadsides every mile or so. They've been here all season.

Had a Pileated Woodpecker in the grove this morning, south of Lac qui Parle CR
12.
