April-like temperatures brought an unusually early surge of waterfowl into Dakota Co. (and, from eBird reports, elsewhere in southern MN, especially Southwest). At the west end of Lake Byllesby today (2/19), Susan and I found 700 Greater White-fronted Geese, hundreds of Canadas, and a few Cackling and Ross's Geese plus a good variety of ducks (Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, etc.). At Emery and 145th St. there were 2,200 Canada Geese and 500 Mallards feeding in a cornfield. Ring-billed Gulls were at several locations and are being widely reported elsewhere--this is very early for this species too.
