Last evening, March 28, some friends and I observed at least 11 American
Woodcock, nine or more of them doing courtship displays, at Black Dog Fen,
Dakota County, which can be accessed from the playground parking area
immediately north of Cliff Road and < 1 mile east of I-35W south of Black Dog
Lake and the Minnesota River. An added bonus was a Great Horned Owl both
hooting and landing in a tree silhouetted against the sunset, as well as a pack
of Coyote howling.
