Over a 5 hour hike this morning at Wm. O'Brien SP, I had one of my best ever days of birding, with over 80 species before the morning was done. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get out later and try for 90 on the day.
Highlights at the park included the most Gray-Cheeked Thrushes I'd ever seen in one day (6), multiple Red-Shouldered Hawks, 2 American Bitterns (1 seen, 1 heard, in different ponds along the Wetland Trail), several Veery, and at least 18 warbler species. Grosbeaks and flycatchers (Willow, Alder, Least) were seemingly everywhere. A Northern Waterthrush was perched on top of a tree in the middle of a wet boggy spot, singing incessantly for quite a long time. I think it's a little south of their usual breeding range but I'm wondering if this one's interested in sticking around. Usually (if not always) I only see them on or near the ground during migration.
