Hi,

Earlier this morning I walked a large grassland at the Lamberton WMA in south
east Redwood county in search of Smith’s Longspurs and I was fortunate to find
a number of them (I estimated at least 30). The area that I searched is a
grassland that has been mowed by the DNR recently and it’s the ankle high type
grass that the Smith’s prefers. There were at least 4 or 5 flocks (some 2 or 3
others up to a dozen). The white lesser coverts were visible on a number of
them as well as the buff colored bellies. All of the Longspurs I flushed gave
the diagnostic rattle call of the Smith’s. Directions for anyone interested
in trying is to go north on Redwood Cty. 17 from Hwy. 14 and go about 1/2 mile.
The field is on the west of Cty 17.
