While out birding today I found American three-toed woodpeckers at two
different locations. First was southwest of Cook, MN. This was on Hwy 25 1.8
miles from Hwy 53 which is the main Hwy running through town. They were on
the west side of the road. It is posted as private but the birds were easily
seen from the roadside today. The second site was on the Lind Rd E. This road
heads west off of Hwy 25 about 4.2 miles from the junction of Hwy 25 and Hwy
53. There were 2 birds at the first site and also at this site. The Lind Rd E
is a short dead end Rd also called Co 660. If you travel to the end there is
an easy turn around area the snow plow uses. The boggy area where the
woodpeckers were seen starts about a half mile from where you turn off of Hwy
25.
There are other sites near Cook where American Three-toed Woodpeckers have been
seen but these are the most recent I have seen.
