The cold weather has dampened the enthusiasm of  birds and birders alike,
and it shows no sign of improving in the next few days. Feeders have been
busy with the usual winter residents.
 
Last week , Carol Birkeland reported a PILEATED WOODPECKER  and GRAY JAY  at
her feeders in the Baudette area of Lake of the Woods County.
 
Beth Siverhus in Warroad, Roseau County observed PINE GROSBEAKS  on the
crabapple trees, and reported a male NORTHERN CARDINAL  at a home in
Warroad.
 
I saw several flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS  in Pennington County on February 7,
one near Thief River Falls, and some along  MN 1 .
 
Two SNOWY OWLS  were reported in Red Lake County this week. Paula Cater also
reported a WESTERN MEADOWLARK  that is overwintering at her place near
Plummer.
 
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW  is visiting Sandy Aubol's feeder in East Grand
Forks, Polk County, from time to time this winter.
 
In Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Jason Swelstad observed a HOODED
MERGANSER  on February 7. Wayne Perala also reported a SHORT-EARED OWL,
GREAT HORNED OWL  and SNOWY OWL  in Otter Tail County that day. He also saw
a NORTHERN SHRIKE, twelve GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, and many COMMON
REDPOLLS.
 
In Grant County, Wayne saw a SHORT-EARED OWL , a GREAT HORNED OWL, many
COMMON REDPOLLS, and several RING-NECKED PHEASANTS  on February 7.
