With slow melting of ice along certain tributary waters of the Upper Miss in La
Crosse, nearly 10k gulls have concentrated along the Black River feeding on
winter kill shad and other fishes during the last week. Several different
cycle lesser black-backed's have been identified, and possibly up to five
Iceland's (including Kumlien's and Thayers subspecies) as well. The ice has
melted and the birds are dispersing. It would be wise to keep a keen eye out
for gulls moving upriver.
