Yesterday June 3rd, was, cloudy, cool, sometimes drizzly, with strong
winds all day from the southeast. We live in an apartment right on the
shore of Lake Superior near 40th Ave. E. on London Rd., Duluth. At dusk I
spotted 6 waterbirds in a line out in the lake off our deck. They had a
loon/grebe-like profile but seemed too large to be Red-necked Grebes and
too small to be loons, but it was too dark and they were too far away to tell
anything else. This morning, June 4th, was clear with a slight breeze, my
husband John spotted six birds at 8:00 am, close to shore off 40th Ave. E.
Creek. With the spotting scope we could easily see they were adult Red-
throated Loons - grey head and neck, red-throat gleaming in the sun, bill
thin for a loon. When diving they would all go done together. We followed
their passage toward Canal Park as far as Glensheen Mansion.
