Appleby Pool drawdown started in July. The pool is most down, but since it
is spring fed, there will always be some water in it. The pool had fish in it,
and the birds have finally caught on that they are easy prey. Pelicans and
herons have moved in and I am not starting to see some shorebirds.

Appleby Pool is in Winona County right along Hwy 74. From St. Charles, go
north on Hwy 74, past Hwy 30. Appleby Pool is on the west side of the
road. The dike is high, so it is hard to see right from the road, but you can
go on the dike and get a good view of the pool. Best viewing is early
morning and evening.

>From Hwy 61, take Hwy 74 south from Weaver and it is the first pool on
the west side of the road.

Randall Pool, closer to the WMA Headquarters naturally draws down every
year starting in mid summer. It is almost totally down, but has been
frequented by a family of sandhill cranes. This pool is also in Winona
County right on Hwy 74 and is completely viewable from your car on the
road. Best viewing is the morning and early evening.
