Hi James, Sounds like a fantastic trip! Have fun. Late July is a tough time to find Sharp-tailed Grouse, LeConte's Sparrow and Great Gray Owl in Sax-Zim. All three are residents so possible to stumble across as you drive the roads in this 300 square mile area but... Great Grays are rarely seen after the spring/early summer "feed-the-fledglings" flurry of activity. You can check the usual roads at dawn and dusk (all marked on our "Birding Map" at www.saxzim.org) Sharp-tailed Grouse at that time of year are dispersed. Best bet would be at dawn driving the roads around the lek and "Sharp-tailed Grouse" feeder marked on the same map referenced above. Also check Sax Road. LeConte's Sparrows stop singing in mid to late July so tough to find. That said, there are spots you could look as we have seen juveniles several times in late July and early August. Once again, specific roads are coded to this species on the map. Lots of other specific areas to check so maybe best to call me sometime and I can give you specific locations to look. Sparky 218-341-3350. I could also tell you spots for Connecticut Warbler (done singing by then, but places you could bushwhack to look for family groups).
Another great spot for Greater Prairie Chicken is Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge. I am highly interested in seeing the following species, and I'm wondering if anybody can provide me with further specifics on locations for any of these at that time of year. I know many can be found at Sax-Zim Bog, but I am unfamiliar with where to look at that location. Greater Prairie-Chicken: I've seen on ebird that Felton Prairie is good, but any specifics on finding this species in summer would be great Sharp-tailed Grouse: at Sax-Zim Bog? If so, where? Yellow Rail: I've seen that McGregor marsh is a good spot, but are there certain trails / areas? LeConte's Sparrow: at Sax-Zim Bog? If so, where? Great Gray Owl: Are these at Sax-Zim bog year-round, and if so, does anyone have any tips on locating them / might be willing to show me around? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
