This morning a flock of around 100 blackbirds (mostly Grackles) descended on the feeders, clearing the platforms of sunflower seeds and emptying the suet cages.
Among them were 2 pairs of Yellow-Headed Blackbirds, marking the first time I've ever seen that species come to a feeding station. I had tulips popping up on Tuesday, and now there's 18 inches of snow. Looks like a fast melt ahead of us in the area. There's a high likelihood that Big Stone NWR won't be open for Salt Lake Weekend as the flooding had not yet abated and there is damage to the roads and facilities. All bets are off for proper shoreline mudflats, but there will be plenty of flooded fields for shorebirds to occupy. -- Jason M.
