Predictably after somewhat unfavorable migrating conditions for the last
several days of April and first few in May, the last two nights of more
favorable weather for migrating has led to an influx of recent migrants the
past 2 days. I saw 11 first of year birds yesterday and 6 more today. For
detailed lists you can check ebird or the MOU database. The southern half of
Carver Park Reserve accessed from Grimm Rd. or Carver Park Rd. has been quite
active, although it takes a lot of walking. I have spent less time than usual
at Rapids Lake this spring because of the constant flooding. Some
highlights today along 8 miles of trails in the southern half of Carver Park
were 1 Virginia Rail, 4 Sora, 1 flyover Willet, 4 Least Flycatcher, 1 Great
Crested Flycatcher, 2 Blue-headed Vireo, 4 wren species, 3 Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, 27 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 1 Gray Catbird, 3 Brown Thrasher, 1
Bobolink, 1 Ovenbird, 5 Northern Waterthrush, 1 Golden-winged, 3
Black-and-white, 2 Tennessee, 3 Orange-crowned, 19 Nashville, 10 Yellow, 22
Palm, 36 Yellow-rumped, 1 Black-throated Green Warbler, and 1 Rose-breasted
Grosbeak.
