Hi,

We were down to the Crosby Farm park this afternoon, and observed a lone
Hooded Merganser duckling in the pond near the picnic area.

He was swimming around and peeping, seemed healthy, but we observed no other
ducklings or adult Mergansers nearby. When i first saw him, i believe he
was sleeping, had his head tucked as they do. I have mostly been observing
the adult Hooded Mergansers in Crosby Farm park on the larger lake northeast
of the picnic area, what's called the Upper Lake on Google maps. I saw

Can we ask more experienced birders--how common is it for ducklings to end
up solo? I have to think it doesn't bode well. But maybe the parents are
nearby. Should we attempt to rescue it? We could bring to wildlife rescue
place in the morning. I have to think it'd be hard to get him because the
pond he's on is somewhat large and he'd just swim away.

Thanks for any input, Brian and Denise, St. Paul MN
