Migration is already winding down, raptors are really on the move right now, and fall sparrows are here in force. Turkey vultures are also on the move and I see at least one every time I go out. Several bald eagles have been seen in and around Thief River Falls and most other places too. An inch or so of snow fell a week or so ago in Thief River Falls, but to the west there was much more. The first snowy owl was reported in eastern North Dakota, so be on the lookout for them in this state. >From Grant County, Charlene Nelson reported a HARRIS'S SPARROW at Elbow Lake on October 22nd. On October 20th, she and several others, reported AMERICAN AVOCETS, MARBLED GODWIT, and HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK at the N. Ottawa Impoundment. Ben Jacques reported a SCARLET TANAGER at Deep Portage Learning Center in Cass County on October 20th. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was spotted by several folks at Fig Lake Farm in Becker County on October 16th. Tim Lamey observed a TURKEY VULTURE at the Clay County landfill near Hawley in Clay County on October 16th. Here at our feeder in Pennington County we have lots of DARK-EYED JUNCOS, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS whose numbers are dwindling, and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER . There have been several sightings of WILD TURKEYS in the county in recent weeks, and Zeann Linder has had up to six EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES coming to her feeder in Thief River Falls this week.
