Most of the Cowbirds have already headed south, but some overwinter in Minnesota usually in mixed blackbird or starling flocks and probably only in the southern part of the state. They have been found found on all of the last 20 Christmas Bird Counts although almost always on less than 5% of the counts. On the Hastings count we almost always find them at one particular feed lot. Two ways to pick them out in the winter: 1) On the ground they are the ones with their tails in the air. 2) On really frigid mornings they are the ones sitting on the backs of the horses and cows.
