Across the road from the entrance to the Empire Township Substation, there was a Shrike, perching low on various utility wires. We didn't get close enough to confirm Northern vs Loggerhead, though it was more likely the former. Horned Larks were present in many fields, singing and displaying territorial behavior. Likewise, Kildeer have returned to many areas. In the fields north of Lake Byllesby, the snowmelt has attracted flocks of waterfowl, including Swans and Greater White-fronted Geese and some duck species like N Shoveler. It wouldn't be surprising to find shorebirds other than Kildeer among them soon. Linda Whyte
