For the past several years a pair of common ravens have nested on our property
near Cook, MN. On Feb 15 I first noticed one of them carrying a small branch
into the black spruce/ tamarack swamp where they have nested in the past. All
nests have been in mature black spruce trees and that is where this years nest
site is as well. I cannot not say for sure that it has been the same pair of
ravens over the years . The different nests have been close to one another.
One nest was used for 3 years before it started to fall apart. The past two
years each new nest has collapsed. Last year the nestlings were fully
feathered and able to hop from branch to branch in the nest tree when the side
of the nest let loose. It wasn’t long before the two nestlings were able to
fly and leave the nest area. The year before there had been a big wind that
caused the nest to fall when nestlings were still young. After the storm I
went to check on them and found some remains of one of the nestlings. The
flight feathers were just beginning to emerge from the shafts. I hope they are
able to build a nest that will last the full nesting season this year.

We have a pair of Canada Jays that frequent our feeders. So far they have both
been visiting almost every day. I wonder if they have started their nest yet.
