With the warm winter to begin 2024, it meant my first early start to birding in
a few years. With Rapids Lake being ice-free by March 2, my waterfowl numbers
were up compared to last year even though I was out only a few times early, but
not all species were higher. Since the last half of March was a bit cooler,
the early start slowed, and birds arrived normally through mid-April. It was
not until late April that some species began arriving slightly earlier than
normal. Leaf-out being 7 days ahead of last spring and 10-14 days ahead of
spring 2022 did not allow for the consistent outstanding viewing through most
of May as those two years. My cumulative count for all species was 15030
down 1.9% from spring 2023, not nearly the difference of the 2084 warbler being
down 30.5% compared to last spring.

This spring I spent 114 hours in the field. That compared to 115 hours in the
field during spring 2023. I did not plan to spend such a similar amount of
time out, and it just worked out that way. There was a difference in how I
spent that time though. With the late winter last year, I was only out once
in March. This year I was out 3 times in March and once in late February.
With those extra early days this year, I ended up going out 19 days this spring
compared to 18 days last. During spring 2023 I went out 11 days in May
compared to 9 days out in May this year. That small difference does affect
comparing warbler totals year on year with this spring's 30.5% decline. But
it's hard to say for sure, since last spring I went out on April 22, 24, 29
compared to spending more time out in later April this year when there were
more warbler around. 6 of the days that I was out in late April and May were
following relatively favorable overnights for migration into southern
Minnesota, so even though I had planned the days I was going to go out several
months in advance, it worked out pretty well.

While the decrease in warbler this spring was relatively consistent across most
of the species, there were a few that saw an increase this spring compared to
last: Blue-winged, Golden-winged, Mourning, Common Yellowthroat, and Canada
Warbler. All except Golden-winged can be explained because they arrived
earlier this year. The increase in a few of the flycatcher species and
Red-eyed Vireo can also be explained by them arriving earlier than last year.
Besides Red-eyed, other vireo numbers were down, and Kinglet and Winter Wren
numbers were down significantly. There were a good number of Veery and Wood
Thrush, but numbers of other migrant thrush were not great. Once again,
migrant sparrow numbers weren't particularly impressive. Even White-throated
Sparrow were down significantly compared to last year. At least I saw a few
more Harris's Sparrow than I usually do. Even with some of the numbers being
down this year, birding was still outstanding throughout the spring. It
appears that my last day out on May 22 was the last significant push of things
into the area from the south, so I don't think I missed a lot after that.

Early in fall, bird numbers were modest on the days I was out. The days when
birds were most numerous occurred in October and November with later fall
species. Most days I was out in August and September had moderate numbers.
In addition to my normal fall trips to Carver Park Reserve and Rapids Lake, for
the first time I did keep track of some backyard birds in August and September,
enjoying better luck than I expected. While I would just casually look out at
birds from my balcony when I happened to notice migrant activity, I did not
keep track of the amount time I was doing this. By the end of November, I had
gotten my fill of birding and was not out again after November 23.

Cumulatively, warbler numbers were down 14.3% compared to fall 2023 with 1970
warbler counted during fall 2024. I did spend less time in the field this fall
than last, about 145.5 hours, down 10.2%. The year-on-year fall warbler
decline would have been greater, 26.6%, had I not paid attention to the yard.
15 warbler species saw a decline, 10 saw an increase, and there was no change
with 2. I did have my best fall season for Cape May Warbler with only a
couple spring seasons in the past being better. This was surprisingly thanks
to the yard, as I saw the normal low amount at Carver Park and Rapids Lake.
This fall was my best season, spring or fall, for Bay-breasted Warbler. They
were more common than usual at Carver Park and Rapids Lake, and they were my
4th most numerous warbler species in the yard.

Regarding other species, blackbird species saw some of the most significant
increases this fall compared to last. Following the poorer fall 2023 season
for most sparrow species, 2024 yielded improved numbers for most sparrow
species this fall. American Tree sparrow and Savannah Sparrow had some of the
greatest increase compared to fall 2023, 206% and 172% increase respectively.
Chipping, Clay-colored, Song, and Swamp each had 40-50% increases, and Junco
numbers were 28% higher than fall 2023. That may say more about the poor
numbers last fall than this fall’s numbers actually being exceptionally higher
than normal. Kinglets and migrant thrush species were higher as well.
Flycatcher numbers were mixed, and all vireo species were less numerous than
fall 2023. My cumulative count for all species this fall was 17480, like
spring, down 1.9% from fall 2023.
