             A SERIES OF SPECIAL SESSIONS ON

   Value-Chain Optimisation using Constraint Programming

OVERVIEW

Constraint processing has emerged as an extremely expressive and powerful
paradigm in which to model, solve and reason about many complex problems.
Over the past several decades advances in both the fundamental aspects of
constraint processing and practical applications of constraints have
contributed to making it one of the most promising of Artificial Intelligence
technologies.

Over the last decade there has been an increasing interest in supply chain
management or, more generally, the management of complex value-chains.
These can be regarded as complex optimisation problems that must be effectively
modelled and solved by state-of-the-art optimisation technologies. These
special sessions aim to present a technical programme representing the
state-of-the-art in using constraints and operations research techniques
to solving complex real world value-chain optimisation problems.

SCOPE

Topics that may be addressed in papers for consideration for inclusion
in this series of special sessions include, but are not limited to:
* optimisation and constraint solving techniques for value chain problems;
* validation of models and solutions: robustness, sensitivity, etc;
* reasoning about uncertainty and change in value chain optimisation;
* distributed and agent-based optimisation across the value-chain;
* optimisation and integrated product development, concurrent engineering,
 Design For X, etc.;
* constraints for decision support;
* scheduling and logistics approaches;
* fundamental advances in constraints and operations research that are
 relevant to value chain optimisation, such as constraint acquisition,
 explanation generation, preference handling, negotiation, etc.;
* hybrid systems for value-chain optimisation involving a significant
 constraint-based element;
* real world applications of optimisation in value chain.

SUBMISSION

Invited papers (6 pages in IFAC double column format) will be reviewed by
at least two referees. As to regular papers, both academic and industrial
oriented communications will be considered. Scientific contributions will
be compiled into several volumes of INCOM06's proceedings. Further submission
instructions are available on the symposium website:

                   http://www.emse.fr/incom2006

These sessions will be organised in order to allow ample time for discussion
and demonstration. In particular, while prospective attendees are generally
expected to submit a full paper, as per the conference guidelines, shorter
submissions may also be considered. For example, short statements of interest
may also be considered, indicating what perspective and background such
authors will bring to the sessions. We also consider position papers
discussing "what users need" or problem statements. "Real users" are
especially welcome to provide their perspectives.

The co-chairs will investigate the potential for a special issue of a
journal on value-chain optimisation using constraint programming.

IMPORTANT DATES

Please express your intention of submission now to Barry O'Sullivan
([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Papers submission deadline: November 15th, 2005
Acceptance notification:    January 6th, 2006
Final papers due: March 1st, 2006

AUDIENCE

This series of special sessions will be of interest to researchers who seek
a deeper understanding of the technical issues associated with modelling and
solving optimisation problems motivated by real world value-chain scenarios
using constraints and operations research techniques. The sessions will also
be of interest to industrialists interested in learning the state-of-the-art
in value-chain-focused optimisation technologies.
