We have recently edited a book which presents 7 agent-oriented
programming languages and their platforms, as well as 2
industrial-strength multi-agent applications. One of the main
characteristic of all selected languages is that they have
working interpreters that can be used in practice. Although each
chapter is contributed by well-known experts in the area,
the book has been edited to form a coherent text; all chapters
follow the same structure and there are appendices with a
summary of the main characteristics of each language, again
in accordance with some comparison criteria previously defined.
This makes it easy to compare different approaches, e.g. with
the aim of choosing a platform for developing a particular
application, or for use a teaching tool for practical coursework
in a particular course.
If you are currently running a course on AI, programming paradigms,
distributed systems, software engineering, etc., both at under- and
post-graduate level, in which you discuss Agents, you might want to
consider recommending our book, in particular if there is practical
coursework.
"This book is about programming languages for a relatively new class
of computer systems, called multi-agent systems.
...
[The book], capturing as it does the state of the art in such a
comprehensive and comprehensible way, will make a fundamental and
lasting contribution to this fascinating area."
