Call for Papers and Presentations

The 22nd IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM
2006), with associated SCAM and WSE will be held 24-27 September 2006
in Philadelphia. We invite Research Papers, Industrial Applications,
Panels, Tool Demonstrations, Dissertation Synopses, and Working
Sessions.

*There will be a special section of IEEE Transactions on Software
*Engineering featuring selected papers of the conference.

The submission deadline for Research Papers is March 31, 2006 and for
all other presentations April 30, 2006.

The International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM) is the
world's premiere international conference for software and systems
maintenance, evolution, and management. We invite you to join us in
exploring issues related to maintaining, modifying, enhancing, and
testing operational systems, and designing, building, testing, and
evolving maintainable systems. ICSM 2006 will address the major
challenges confronting maintenance and evolution.

There will be a "Distinguished Speaker Session" this year and Richard
Stallman will be one of the distinguished speakers.

Please forward this Call to anybody who you think may be interested.
Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this.

RESEARCH PAPERS

Research papers should describe original and significant work in the
research and practice of software maintenance and evolution. Case
studies, empirical research, and well-designed experiments are
particularly welcome. Research papers must not exceed 10 pages in
final printed form.

Following a recent tradition, there will be a best paper award which
will include 200 pounds sterling of Wiley books!

Submit by March 31, 2006.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Proposals for presentations of Industrial Applications are
particularly welcome, with an eye on sharing industrial problems,
experiences and insights with the research community. These should be
state-of-the-art descriptions, problem analyses, experience reports,
and survey reports from real projects, industrial practices, solutions
and models. A two-page summary of accepted proposals will be included
in the conference proceedings. Submit by April 30, 2006.

SHORT PAPERS

We invite the submission of short papers, which allow authors an
opportunity to present new ideas or a gem of information that is
likely to stimulate discussion. They will be allocated 10 minute
presentation slots in groups aimed at encouraging audience
involvement. Short papers will be included in the conference
proceedings and should be no more than 4 pages (about 2000 words).
They must be clearly marked "Short Paper". The first page should
contain the title, all authors' names and affiliations, and full
contact information (including email, address, phone, fax) for the
lead author. Submit by March 31, 2006.

POSTERS

We invite submissions of posters for display and discussion during an
evening reception at ICSM. Poster presentations represent an
opportunity for new or highly interactive ideas to be presented in a
more casual setting. It is appropriate to include handouts along with
the poster. A one page summary of each accepted poster will be
included in the conference proceedings. Summaries must be clearly
marked "Poster Summary" and contain the title, all authors' names and
affiliations, and full contact information (including email, address,
phone, fax) for the lead author. Submit by March 31, 2006.

PANELS

ICSM 2006 invites proposals for panel sessions that serve to stimulate
discussion about ideas and issues of importance to the software
maintenance community. We particularly welcome proposals for highly
interactive panel sessions that encourage discussion, debate, and the
transfer of ideas and understanding between the industrial and
research communities. A one-page summary of the panel will be
included in the conference proceedings. Submit a short description
about the topic and the potential panelists by April 30, 2006.

TOOL DEMONSTRATIONS

We invite one-page proposals for both commercial and research tools.
Proposals should include a description of the tool, its applicability
to software maintenance, and specify the type of exhibition ("Research
Prototype" or "Vendor Tool"). The goal of the tool demonstration
session is to let conference participants view software maintenance
tools in action and discuss these systems with their creators. ICSM
2006 will provide accommodations for presenters of accepted tool
proposals in the tool exhibition conference room. Presenters are asked
to bring their own equipment and are responsible for their own set-up.
A two-page summary of accepted tool proposals will be included in the
conference proceedings. Submit a description of the tool and its
applicability to software maintenance by April 30, 2006.

DISSERTATION FORUM

We welcome submissions from researchers that defended their
dissertation (Ph.D.) in the last three years (since 2003) or will
defend by the submission deadline. This forum is intended to expose
the work of young researchers to established researchers and the
broader software maintenance and evolution community.

Please submit a synopsis of your dissertation of 4 pages or less and
the full dissertation in PDF. Accepted synopses will be included in
the conference proceedings and a special Dissertation Forum session
will be organized at the conference. Submit by April 30, 2006.

WORKING SESSIONS

We invite proposals for working sessions (which focus on issues rather
than panel experts). Working sessions are designed to generate some
strong discussion (and hopefully plans for follow-up work). Session
chairs will be expected to put problems, ideas, approaches and partial
solutions on the table and in a call for workshop participants.
Participants will be expected to contribute to the problems, ideas,
approaches and partial solutions on the table. The goal of a working
session is to develop a technical road-map for an area with an
emphasis on practical applications. The working sessions' organizers
will begin with a draft outline of the road-map, and this will
coalesce through the discussions. Presentations will identify
promising trends including their own work and experience reports. The
working sessions' results will be folded into an overall road-map of
what is currently known, what works in practice, and where the gaps
and challenges are.

Prospective working session chairs must submit a completed working
session proposal form and a 1500 words working session position
paper to qualify. The organizing committee will review applications
and send invitations to qualified applicants. Submit by April 30, 2006.

MEDIA AND STYLE

Submissions will be accepted only as Adobe Acrobat PDF or PostScript
electronic submission. All submissions must be in English.
