Yes and no.  The first time that you visit a site and get the hostname
mismatch error, if you click OK (or continue or whatever it is), it 
should remember that you've OKed that particular site name, and shouldn't
bother you about that site any more ... until you restart your browser.

The server administrator of mail.xxx.tld should get a cert for that server
that says mail.xxx.tld.  Alternatively, it could say *.xxx.tld.
