calls CERT_VerifyCertNow with certUsage=certUsageAnyCA:

Indeed. According to the cvs logs, it's been that way for a long time. I tried the same operation with both NSS 3.6 and NSS 3.3.2 and it crashed the same way.

I have opened bug 177556 for this.
