Depending on the version of NSS you're using, mozilla may now be using a
cert8.db file.
It's version 1.1 which uses cert7.db and key3.db. I deleted both, but
still the crash was reproduced.
A stack trace from the crash would be helpful. Otherwise, we can only
assume that this is some sort of DB corruption.

Is there any chance that this apparent DB corruption is due to running one
of NSS's command line utilities on the DBs while the browser is in use?
No, I didn't use the nss tools prior to the crash.
But afterwards I examined the db with certutil: it seemed to be o.k.
