You tested 3 of the 4 obvious combinations:

What were the results of testing NSS 3.3.1 with NS6? I expect it to work.
Finally, here's a suggestion for one more test for NS4. In your past tests,
when you imported the cert with pk12util, you created that DB with another
of the NSS utility programs. Try creating the cert db and key DB with NS4,
(including setting the password on the key DB with NS4) then using pk12util
to import the certs into the DBs created by NS4. You might get different
results. Please let us know here.
