since the timeframe between the release of Mozilla 1.5 and of Mozilla 1.6, ie mz 1.5 is able to connect using EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA, and mz 1.6 gives the -8092 error.

The new limit was first imposed in NSS 3.9, and AFAIK, mozilla 1.7 was the first release that used 3.9. Maybe I'm misremembering, and 1.6 also used NSS 3.9. Anyone know for sure?

If 1.7 was the first to use NSS 3.9, then the limit imposed in 3.9 does
not explain why 1.6 seems to also experience this limit.

I was wondering if I could in fact have truly tested with Mozilla 1.6.1 instead, but about says "rv:1.6 Gecko/20040113" and Generic Crypto Services in the Security Modules and Devices says "HW version 3.8".

But given that Mozilla uses the NSS_CLIENT_TAG tag on NSS (OK, not for releases, but releases use a tag that is a copy of what NSS_CLIENT_TAG is at time of release), and *not* any official NSS release, it might very well be a 3.8 version with that one patch from 3.9 included.
