I think it's safe to say VeriSign cares about their brand as they spend
a good bit of money building it.

I think it's safe to say VeriSign wants to compete on authentication
quality (instead of just service quality and price) given their support
for the IETF "cert logo" stuff which enables software (e.g.
http://trustbar.mozdev.org) to readily show the user who did the
authentication of a website.
